Mobile chips battle for processing power

Inside your smartphone, a battle is raging. As tiny chips with big ambitions fight for processing power, is there anything the phones of the future will not be able to do?
High-definition TV and ultra-complex gaming - all in 3D - is a big task for any computer.
Especially as it tries to calculate the way the shadows should behave, or the way the light should reflect off each of the two million pixels on screen, 50 times a second.
Such complex graphics on home computers have only become possible in the last few years, as chip technology has caught up with designers' aspirations.
But in the future, mobile phones will be able to handle this and much more - thanks to the prototype chips being designed by one of the most quietly successful and profitable companies in IT - ARM.
ARM does not manufacture chips but rather designs them for other people to make.

Around 95% of the world's smartphones have an ARM chip inside and, although the company does not discuss its customers, it is widely believed that there is even an ARM chip inside Apple's iPad.
ARM designs are so popular with mobile manufacturers because of their low power consumption.
Whereas a home computer can draw more electricity from the mains when it needs to do something complicated, mobile devices need to manage their power consumption carefully, lest they suck their tiny batteries dry.

Snapdragon silicon
ARM's director of marketing, Laurence Bryant, says it is something that ARM, with its Reduced Instruction Set Computing, has specialised in for 20 years.
"In the mobile world, the primary driver has always been about low power and this seems to be taking the biggest traction in the industry right now.
"Once you have got that low power you can create low-cost and small form factors. You can have smaller batteries and you can be innovative with your form factor and your industrial design.
"As the manufacturing process in which chips are made has changed, we have been able to pack more and more performance into the same piece of silicon."
So much performance, in fact, that you will now find ARM inside bigger more powerful devices - tablet computers, e-readers and even netbook-style devices.

One of the best-known chips based on the architecture that ARM licenses to manufacturers is technology company Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor.
At Qualcomm's recent iQ showcase, prototype phones were sporting a new graphics processing unit, giving them graphical oomph to rival a desktop machine - running a 3D game, showing four HD videos at once and rendering real-time mapping applications with 3D graphics.
Intel is the world's biggest chip maker - open a PC and there is a very good chance that you will find, to coin its own marketing slogan, Intel inside.
But there is not a single smartphone in the world that has the same credentials. So why not? After all, Intel do have a low-power chip, the Atom, which is widely used in netbooks.

Heavily-armed market
Ian Fogg of Forrester Research explains that Intel have had limited success pushing the Atom into smaller devices.
"Part of the problem is, they are coming from the PC market and they are having to design something that is super efficient.
"There are already established players in mobile and having completely different technology means a company does not just have to change the processor, but they have to change other parts of their product that tie in to the processor.
"It is quite a big decision for a company to switch away from ARM technology to something very different."
The chip Intel is hoping to break into the smartphone market with is a version of the Atom - codenamed Moorestown and laden with amazing claims about power efficiency and performance.

But so far, there has only been one smartphone demo with the Moorestown chipset inside and soon after its unveiling at consumer technology tradeshow CES in January, its development was halted.
Speaking at the show, Intel's chief executive Paul Otellini did not seem convinced that smartphones were the future at all.
"I think a lot of the growth is going to be mobile, in all form factors. It is way too early to decide which form factor is going to win - the laptop, the netbook, the smartphone. For the foreseeable future they are all going to thrive."
Intel argues that since we will expect a full PC experience from tomorrow's mobile devices, it makes sense to have the same make of chips in both, to ensure full compatibility.
That is why it says its Moorestown smartphones, now scheduled for 2011, are the sensible choice of architecture.
But with Nokia launching its latest ARM-powered devices this week, and Samsung announcing its first dual core ARM processor for smartphones and tablets, Intel may well find it difficult to force its way into an already heavily armed market.

Keris

Pegangan keris Sulawesi menggambarkan burung laut.

* tangguh Majapahit
* tangguh Pajajaran
* tangguh Mataram
* tangguh Yogyakarta
* tangguh Surakarta.

Sejarah

Lagu-lagu badeng: Lailahaileloh, Ya’ti, Kasreng, Yautike, Lilimbungan, Solaloh.

Buncis

Google Instant promises live search results

Google has sped up its internet search engine by launching a new product, Google Instant, that displays results as soon as users type in queries.

"This is search at the speed of thought. It represents a quantum leap in search," the company said.
Previously Google's suggested search terms and did not reveal results until the "enter" key was hit or the "search" button was clicked.
Google Instant goes live in the next week and on mobile devices by autumn.
It will be rolled out in US on Wednesday and in the UK, Spain, Germany, France and Russia during the coming week.

Challenge to Microsoft? In a demo event held at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art, Marissa Mayer, Google's vice-president of search
As typed, results appeared instantly for "SF MOMA" - the first predicted search result.
In another demo, when the letter "w" was entered, a list of links offering the "weather" appeared along with images showing the temperature.
"We've actually predicting what query you are likely to do and we're giving you results for that," said Ms Mayer.
Google estimates that the typical user spends nine seconds entering a query and 15 seconds looking for answers.
The company says Google Instant could shave between two and five seconds off a typical web search.
"Google is betting all they have that speed is everything," Harry McCracken of technology blog Technologizer.com told the BBC.
"Saving one or two seconds isn't that big of a deal. One of my instant thoughts is that I am going to see results I don't want because until I type enough that it knows what I want, it is going to show me links I am not interested in."
Technology commentator Robert Scoble said that the new feature would present a real challenge to Microsoft and its search engine Bing, which has been slowly chipping away at Google's lead in the search market.
"Playing with it, it dramatically changes the way I do searches. I think it is a pretty major leap forward but this means that Bing becomes far less interesting and they now have to step up," said Mr Scoble.

Cyberwarfare, North Korea, Rupert Murdoch and... The Big Lebowski ?

Say it ain't so! The Dude, Jeff Bridges' pot-head bowling anti-hero of film The Big Lebowski, has managed to get himself tied up with Kim Jong Il's North Korean regime.
According to a Bloomberg article, programmers from North Korea's General Federal of Science and Technology developed mobile phone games Big Lebowski Bowling and Men in Black: Alien Assault in 2007.
The games were both published by Ojom Gmbh, a unit of mobile game publisher Jamba, which was later purchased by News Corp. and renamed Fox Mobile. Both games came out after Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. took a controlling interest in the publisher, but before the company was taken over completely.
The seeming connection between the game and North Korea first came out today in the Bloomberg article which says these games "represent a growing software industry championed by Kim that is boosting the economy of one of the poorest countries in the world and raising the technological skills of workers."
Skills that could in theory be put to use bolstering the countries cyberwarfare capabilities. South Korea has said in the past that North Korea has been responsible for extensive cyber attacks in the past.
The Bloomberg article goes on to quote James Lewis, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington-based policy group, about the downside of buying North Korean-produced products. Lewis says that giving North Korea cash works against U.S. policy and warns about the possibility of strengthening Kim's cyber-espionage capabilities.
There's a lot of dot connecting going on in the article, but the final picture the article seems to draw for us doesn't seem too far beyond the scope of reason.
Their conclusion seems strengthened by Fox Mobile spokeswoman Juliane Walther in Berlin, who tells Bloomberg that the company has "xtensive partnerships with content producers in all areas, with operators, and with the biggest media companies worldwide, including various Asian companies." She then declines to be more specific about the company's partners and where they are based.
The other side of the coin, of course, is that more money for North Korea means less misfortune, perhaps, for its citizens and more modernization.

Indonesia

Background
The Dutch began to colonize Indonesia in the early 17th century; Japan occupied the islands from 1942 to 1945. Indonesia declared its independence after Japan’s surrender, but it required four years of intermittent negotiations, recurring hostilities, and UN mediation before the Netherlands agreed to transfer sovereignty in 1949. Indonesia’s first free parliamentary election after decades of repressive rule took place in 1999. Indonesia is now the world’s third-largest democracy, the world’s largest archipelagic state, and home to the world’s largest Muslim population. Current issues include: alleviating poverty, improving education, preventing terrorism, consolidating democracy after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing economic and financial reforms, stemming corruption, holding the military and police accountable for past human rights violations, addressing climate change, and controlling avian influenza. In 2005, Indonesia reached a historic peace agreement with armed separatists in Aceh, which led to democratic elections in Aceh in December 2006. Indonesia continues to face a low intensity separatist movement in Papua.

Economy
Indonesia, a vast polyglot nation, has weathered the global financial crisis relatively smoothly because of its heavy reliance on domestic consumption as the driver of economic growth. Although the economy slowed significantly from the 6%-plus growth rate recorded in 2007 and 2008, expanding at 4% in the first half of 2009, Indonesia outperformed its regional neighbors and joined China and India as the only G20 members posting growth during the crisis. The government used fiscal stimulus measures and monetary policy to counter the effects of the crisis and offered cash transfers to poor families; in addition, campaign spending in advance of legislative and presidential elections in April and July helped buoy consumption. The government made economic advances under the first administration of President YUDHOYONO, introducing significant reforms in the financial sector, including tax and customs reforms, the use of Treasury bills, and capital market development and supervision. Indonesia’s debt-to-GDP ratio in recent years has declined steadily because of increasingly robust GDP growth and sound fiscal stewardship. Indonesia still struggles with poverty and unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, corruption, a complex regulatory environment, and unequal resource distribution among regions. YUDHOYONO’s reelection, with respected economist BOEDIONO as his vice president, suggests broad continuity of economic policy, although the start of their term has been marred by corruption scandals. The government in 2010 faces the ongoing challenge of improving Indonesia’s insufficient infrastructure to remove impediments to economic growth, while addressing climate change mitigation and adaptation needs, particularly with regard to conserving Indonesia’s forests and peatlands.

Teh hitam

Teh lagi, teh lagi.
